Out of the many mysteries about women that men have not been able to understand, the one that really tops their list is “What is it with women and shoes?” It amazes them;how while walking on the street, engaged in a particularly interesting conversation, one look at the shoe store across the street leaves, women wonderstruck, they walk towards it completely hypnotized and spot the most gorgeous pair of shoes displayed deftly on top of the shelves in the distance. Well this phenomenon is something that even women can’t explain. To most women  shoes ,mean more than merely keeping one’s foot covered. But really, each time we see a pair of pretty shoes, the feeling of owning them is simply euphoric.

Shoes are so intimate. Think about it. Shoes are so personal, so caring, so friendly, so flattering. Shoes are so exasperating and hurtful if you let them seduce you.

Footwear is primarily an invention of necessity to protect us from the elements. However, over the centuries and in almost every culture, footwear has taken vastly different forms, proving that there is far more at play than mere protection. Footwear is directly under the influence of fashion, and change is the fodder of fashion. The history of shoes traces back to the 1600’s. At that time the shoes worn by a person symbolized their social strata. The richer the person, the higher and better the shoes. In the late 1800,s the counts ordered the shoes of their wives to be as tall as 10 inches, in which the women could barely walk, they required maids to go from one place to another; this was because the men didn’t want their women to go far away while they had gone out for work. With changing times, the kinds of shoes have evolved making them a necessary, fashion accessory.

Shoes, they essentially define the person that you are.  Maggie Feller the character played by Cameron Diaz in the 2005 hit film ‘In her shoes’ says “Shoes like these should not be locked in a closet! They should be living a life of scandal, and passion and getting screwed in an alleyway by a billionaire while his frigid wife waits in the limo thinking that he just went back into the bar to get his cell phone.”

Red hot strappy heels

Shoes are little personalities in themselves. It is really not hard to understand why women need more than one pair of shoes. The color of our shoes reflects our mood for the day. For instance, slipping on a pair of red heels makes us feel sexy so it’s a good day to blow some sweet whispers into our ears. Donning a pair of black boots allows us to exude a sense of authority, an implicit sign of saying “Don’t mess with us”.

Contrary to popular belief, Cinderella’s stepsisters were not desperate for Prince Charming — they were desperate for her glass slipper. The reason women give shoe shopping an upper hand to clothes is because shoes never make you feel bad or guilty about the way you look or the extra kilos on your waist. The shoe size is static, it never changes and shoes fit just perfect.

Another interesting fact about women is that they seem to love things that hurt them the most. Just the way they always have a soft corner for the man who has hurt them the most, Women lust for high heels. Heels maybe hurtful, but they make you feel confident, good about you. Plus they are cheaper than psychotherapy ,so go ahead slip in your favorite pair of heels once in a while.

Shoes can brighten up the whole outfit instantly and enhance our style of dressing. Just like you dress for a particular occasion, each shoe is meant for a different occasion. Following are the basic must haves in anyone’s collection:

Dear Aashna, thank you for a considerable insight into the woman’s mind through this article. Your writing style was feminist, but with subtle humour. Its true that women have a crazy fetish for shoes. The dialogue by Cameron Diaz was quite a revelation. I personally know some women who flaunt the fact that they own almost 50-60 pairs (and they’re NOT celebrities). What they derived out of shoes/heels was something unknown to me till now. Your interpretations were quite appropriate and made sense. But saying that all women make sense would be wrong(!). I personally love the black stilettos on girls (though not many of them wear them due to the difficulty in walking).
Its interesting to note how our clothes and accessories define us and have become an indispensable part of our lives. This also reminds me of the saying “the shoes make the man” from which we can say that men are equally bothered about footwear than ever before. Its no longer a woman’s foray alone. Today, men are experimenting with colours (sometimes as atrocious as green and yellow) and are quite particular about the shoe type and brand. Well, we are inquisitive humans and if we see something around us, we’re bound to get curious and take the plunge. Footwear will never go out of fashion and women will continue to lure us gentlemen with their beautified feet and even better shoes!
The ‘show’ must go on! :)

i think i just fell head over heels in love with this article. :D

can you write something on what women dislike the next time, please!

i loved d article..its amazin aashna!!!;)

Someone once said shoes to women are like boobs to men. I would agree. Well except that men have biological and evolutionary reasons for liking boobs, whereas women just think shoes are pretty =P
